Choosing Your 9th Grade Courses
All students will take the following courses as incoming TJHSST 9th graders:

Those who received admissions on May 24 - Please fill out the Course Request form by May 31, 2024.
Biology 1
Required component of the Integrated Biology, English, Statistics and Technology (IBEST) program
English 9
Required component of the IBEST program
Math
Students will be placed into math based on the highest level of math they have completed in middle school.
Students who have completed Algebra 1 will be placed into TJHSST Research Statistics 1 & TJHSST Math 1
Students who have completed Geometry will be placed into TJHSST Research Statistics 1 & TJHSST Math 3
Students who have completed Algebra 2 (all variations) will be placed into TJHSST Research Statistics 1 & TJHSST Math 4
Students who have completed PreCalculus and above (all variations) will be individually placed in math as deemed appropriate by the school's math department and administration.
Design & Technology
Required component of the IBEST program
Health & PE 9
This course and all diploma requirements must be taken during the school day. Online courses can be taken only during 1st period and students would have to have their own transportation to school. Please consult the TJHSST Online Course Policy for additional details and parental responsibilities when students elect to take an online course.
World Language
Students may either continue studying the world language they studied in middle school or may choose to start a new language.
One elective
Incoming 9th graders have a variety of elective options. These include: Journalism (newspaper), Photojournalism (yearbook), the Performing Arts (music & theater), Visual Arts (including digital art), Ancient & Classical Civilizations, African American History, and Computer Science.
Online courses (also called "ninth" period)
TJ has seven academic periods and our 8th period for clubs and activities. Taking an additional online course during the school year (also called "ninth" period) is optional and should be carefully considered when thinking about overall academic load.
Please be aware that online courses taken beyond the regular school day carry a fee and must be completed outside the regular school day.
