Academic Advising Timeline
Academic Advising
Academic Advising is an in-person meeting between each student and the assigned school counselor to guide and support students in their educational journey at TJHSST. This individual meeting is designed to help students set and achieve academic goals, understand their strengths and challenges, explore post-secondary education and career options, consider opportunities for summer learning, and develop important life skills.
During the academic advising meeting, your child and the counselor will carefully review the 25-26 course requests to ensure that:
- students are on track to meet the VDOE advanced studies diploma requirements which are unique to the TJHSST diploma
- any necessary prerequisite courses have been completed
- student interest and passions are reflected in their selections,
- and most importantly, strong consideration is given to selecting courses that allow students to achieve a healthy balance between school, family, and other activities.
These meetings typically last between 10-20 minutes per student. We ask that students make the most of this valuable time by coming prepared with the following information and action items already complete:
- Action: All course requests have been added in StudentVUE; this should total 7 credits
- Action: Add at least 4 alternate electives in StudentVUE
- Action: Print and fill-out a copy of the 4-year plan template to give to your counselor
- Information: Ensure that students and parents/guardians are on the same page regarding plans for optional summer learning
- Information: Ensure that students and parents/guardians are on the same page regarding plans for optional 8th courses, and/or evening courses taken through Online Campus

Requesting Changes to Course Selections
Students have access to begin entering course requests into SIS StudentVUE on Monday, January 6, 2025. This access will remain open for students until the Academic Advising meeting with the assigned counselor, at which time, the counselor will lock-in the course requests. The student will no longer be able to make changes to course requests in SIS once they have been locked in. Students may reach out to their counselors to request changes to the course requests until Friday, March 14, 2025.
Parents and Guardians will be encouraged to view students’ course requests through SIS ParentVUE throughout the entire course selection process. At the close of each Academic Advising window by grade level, parents and guardians will be notified and invited to submit a Google Form to verify and approve their child’s course requests for the 2025-2026 school year. The deadline for parents and guardians to request changes to the course requests is Friday, March 21, 2025.
After that date, we go to work staffing our building with talented teachers and building an optimum master schedule using the students’ course requests. Because we strive to meet our students’ needs and preferences when building the schedule, we do not honor requests to change course selections after the Academic Advising window closes.
