December is a bustling time of year here at TJHSST and in the College and Career Center (CCC)!

Joy! 9th graders will be coming to a Holiday Open House in Student Services with their IBET groups to get to know our location, the personnel, and all of the resources available to them in the Student Services suite.  Our current 10th graders enjoyed this Open House last year and we are excited to continue the tradition!

Portrait of a Graduate skills!  10th graders, and all students, are encouraged to sign up for 8th periods in the CCC over the next few months.   We'll have workshops about interview skills, deciphering the high school transcript, and using Naviance Student to explore strengths and interests.  Students should reference the student intranet for more information about dates and topics.

Planning! 11th graders will have their Junior College Kick-Off presentations with their counselors during 8th period on December 13, 2019.  The counselors will give the same presentation to parents of Juniors on December 18, 2019 at 5:30 p.m.   These presentations are meant to start the conversations between students and their families about building a FIT list of colleges that align with the three core elements of FIT:  Academic, Social and Financial.  A good book to reference, particularly for families new to this process,  is "The Truth about College Admission, A Family Guide" by Brennan Barnard and Rick Clark.

Perspective! 12th graders have submitted all their transcript requests for the colleges to which they will be applying and many students will receive their first admissions decisions for their Early Decision and some Early Action schools this month.   While these decisions may bring elation, sorrow, and/or a mix of emotions,  please remember these important words from Marie Bigham, a former board director at the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC):

"Whatever the outcome, keep this in mind: admission acceptance, denial and deferment are strictly a reflection of the process. They are not an indictment about parenting or a statement about success for your  future.  Don’t get stuck on one or two places. Remind yourself that there are many outstanding options, really a broad breadth and depth of colleges available to you."

We are here to support all TJHSST students through these high school transitions, so please don't hesitate to reach out to anyone in Student Services if you have questions or concerns.
